THE PROGRAMME
Bryson House is one of Northern Ireland’s oldest charities,
serving the community since 1906. Its Schools Education Programme
started in 1986, providing a free environmental awareness programme
to selected schools in Belfast and has continued to develop and
grow across the greater Belfast area.
The Environmental Education Unit delivers the ‘Reduce,
Re-use and Recycle’ message to primary schools across
Northern Ireland. With the launch of the School’s Recycling
Programme to all schools in the Belfast area, Education Officers
will now be supporting this programme as it rolls out from September
2004.
Much research exists that tells us that, if we are to influence
and shape habits, we must start with children. Habits, like recycling,
can be then be re-enforced over their entire lives.
Bryson House Recycling Education Programme has been designed to
not only deliver the serious message on waste minimisation in a
fun and interesting way, but also to fit in with the current National
Curriculum, as well as the new, revised curriculum. The main aim
is to promote the message of the three R’s – reduce,
re-use and recycle, both in school and at home. This is achieved
using a variety of interventions, depending on resources available
and what the teacher or school requires. If possible, we use a combination
of approaches over one or several visits to a class or school.
The Unit also provides a number of other services:
• training for student teachers
• sending information to schools
• meeting with teachers to advise them on ways to set up their
own recycling programme.
