PROGRAMMES AVAILABLE
Each visit is tailored to the needs and abilities of the class
and we use a variety of different delivery methods. These range
from talks to several classes in the assembly hall to lessons in
the classroom to recycling drama to arts and crafts made reusing
waste materials.
Although the techniques are different, every visit has the same
underlying message, we must reduce the amount of waste we send to
the landfill. Whether this is by changing shopping habits, or by
reusing and recycling more materials. We also talk to groups about
what recycling facilities are available where they live e.g. blue
bin, kerbside box, school’s recycling programme. We are also
careful to explain why we need to reduce, reuse and recycle e.g.
landfill capacity, environmental destruction due to acquisition
of raw materials etc.
Please note that currently visits are only available to schools
within Belfast due to funding stipulations.
Current Programmes
Waste education programmes are now available for Key Stages
One – Three. All are curriculum linked and can be tailored
to suit the needs of the school. Our approach aims to encourage
children to participate in recycling themselves as well as carrying
the message home to their families and community.
Sort It Out
The Sort It Out waste education programme is available to
primary schools with different elements for Key Stages One and Two.
Key Stage One
Sort It Out Presentation - A general recycling presentation,
including Mr. Rat's Recycling Story, a fun introduction to the topic
for younger children. Follow up worksheets are available to download
by class teachers.
Sort It Out in the classroom - A classroom workshop based
around recycling and waste reduction. This visit includes a presentation,
worksheets and looking at examples of recycled materials.
Wasted Workshop – A short presentation followed
by a selection of games and crafts to make learning about recycling
fun. All the crafts involve the reuse of waste materials.
Key Stage Two
Sort It Out Presentation - Looks at the Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle message in detail, focusing on what happens to the materials
after they are collected for recycling and where they came from
in the first pace. Follow up worksheets are available for downloading
by teachers.
Sort It Out in the classroom – A classroom based
workshop, looking at the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle message. The workshop
is a mixture of looking at pictures, examples of recycled products
and worksheets.
The Material World - A classroom workshop looking at where
the different materials we use every day come from, and why it is
important for us to recycle them.
Product Placement - An investigation into a selection
of products and packaging. What are they made of? Where did they
come from? Can they be recycled? In groups, the class will examine
the products and record their observations.
Composting Critters - Nature recycles all the waste it
produces. Learn about some of the interesting creatures that recycle
for nature and how they do it. Can include a minibeast hunt in the
school grounds.
In The Can (Drama) - A fun, easy way to learn about where
aluminium comes from and the damage done to the rainforest acquiring
it.
Sort It Out (Drama) - What will we do when the landfill
is full? This drama will show us how to Sort It Out!
In both dramas, every child has their own role to play and they
make all their own props/costumes by reusing waste materials.
Wasted Workshop – A short presentation followed
by series of crafts and games. All crafts will involve the reuse
or recycling of waste materials and the games are also waste related.
There are usually three activities. Working in groups, they have
approx 20 minutes for each activity, before moving on to the next
one.
The Sustainable World
This is a new pilot programme aimed at Key Stage 3. It is
intended to link in with the new 'citizenship' strand of the curriculum,
as well as science and geography. Education for Sustainable Development
(ESD) is becoming increasingly important, and the programme will
use education about waste and recycling to deal with some important
issues. It is anticipated that Key Stage 3 pupils will develop their
skills in participation and responsible action, fundamental elements
of citizenship.
The Sustainable World - A general presentation dealing
with the basics of why we need to recycle, sustainability etc.
The Mobile World - A classroom based activity on the importance
of recycling mobile phones. Pupils look at where materials come
from, where they go and design their own 'eco-phone'.
The Disposable World - An investigation into how we deal
with our waste, and involves a group-work activity. The pupils act
members of the Local Authority responsible for waste management
for an imaginary town and must make
decisions for their town on how to deal with it's rubbish.
