DIFFERENT FORMS OF ENERGY
When you go to school on a car or a bus, it uses many different
forms of ENERGY. To find out more take a closer look at the car
Nathan's Mum and Dad drive.
The car or bus that brings you to school gets its energy from petrol
and a battery. The petrol stores Chemical Energy, while the battery
stores Electrical Energy.
The engine changes this chemical energy and electrical energy into
other types of energy - think what happens when the car or bus is
turned on; what do you hear, see, smell and feel?
We can hear the engine starting. This is Sound Energy.
When it is dark we switch on the headlamps. This is Light
Energy.
After the car or bus engine has been running for a while the bonnet
gets warm; this is Heat Energy. Heat energy is
always produced when things work. For instance, when we run about,
we get hot.
When we drive about in a car the car is moving and this is Mechanical
energy.
Hot Tip
Starting the
engine uses a lot of fuel so lots of people leave the engine running
when they are waiting for somebody. However if the car engine is
left running for more than 1 minute when waiting for somebody it
uses more fuel and energy than switching it off and back on again
later.
Let's Investigate
On the next page you will find some experiments you can do to
learn more about energy.
