AND FINALLY...

The pictures below may not look so nice, but they show a great way to recycle all your all food scraps!

Food scraps

George has a wormery in his kitchen. This is a container, similar in size to a normal bin, for food scraps like banana skins, apple cores and peelings from vegetables. George also adds crumpled-up cardboard e.g. toilet roll tubes to provide airspaces and absorb moisture. Something lives in the bin…..look closely at the next pictures (click on them if you want to enlarge them) to see if you can spot them…

Did you spot the worms? The bin contains worms which feed on all the old food scraps – nature’s recycling! The worms digest all the food scraps, and what comes out the other end is called worm cast or worm compost – excellent for growing plants! George then empties the wormery and uses the compost for growing new plants, vegetables and fruit – the cycle is complete!

To find out more about recycling in your area e.g. where your nearest recycling facility is, or when you will get recycling facilities at home, why not call your local council and ask to speak to the Recycling Officer. Or, if you feel strongly about a particular issue related to recycling, you could write to your local councillor.
