Every day resources and energy are used in making things that
we then use and throw away. By trying to reduce the amount of waste
we produce, we can help to minimise this. But what can you do? Each
and every one of us is responsible for reducing the amount of waste
that we personally produce. Here are a few tips:
At home:
• Try not to buy things with too much packaging. For example,
buy fruit loose instead of on a plastic tray covered with plastic
film, or buy one big bag of something instead of several smaller
ones.
• Don’t buy things that are designed to be thrown away
e.g. disposable items like nappies, cameras, plates and cups, razors,
face wipes and cleaning cloths.
• Buy items which are more likely to last e.g. strong carrier
bags that supermarkets sell for a small price, instead of using
ordinary ones.
• Don’t take a plastic bag unless you really need one.
You can do your bit in school as well:
• Photocopy and/or write on both sides of the page.
• Bring drinks in re-usable bottles.
• Bring lunch in a re-usable container instead of wrapped
in materials that have to be disposed of.
