ECYCLE
Approximately half of what we throw in the bin could be recycled.
Recycling is the processing of waste into new things. This saves
natural resources and energy, and reduces pollution as well as the
amount of waste sent to landfill.
The Local Authority where you live is responsible for recycling
in the area. Usually they provide amenity sites for people to take
their rubbish for recycling. Many are now running schemes where
materials for recycling are collected directly from your home, using
kerbside boxes, blue bins or green bins, and brown bins for garden
waste.
From the amenity site, or your kerbside box, blue bin etc, they
are taken to a recycling centre where they are sorted (if not done
so on the kerb), usually compacted, and then baled. Compacting and
baling the materials makes them easier to store, as they take up
less room. Then they are ready to be transported to a recycling
factory (usually known as reprocessors) where they undergo the processes
that will turn them into new products.
The main materials that we can recycle in Northern
Ireland are:
